Jones' main competition is expected to come from countrywoman Kate Major, while defending champion American Michael Lovato is most likely to push New Zealand's Bozzone. Michael Lovato, USA, and Michellie Jones, AUS, won today's Amica Ironman 70.3 Rhode Island Triathlon, presented by Ford. Lovato, a two-time Ironman champion, claimed the title with an overall time of 3:54:39. Last year's runner-up, Richie Cunnigham, remained consistent with another second place finish with a time of 3:54:50. A professional field consisting of some of the sport's top contenders will vie for the title, including Cameron Brown, Richie Cunningham, Michellie Jones, Michael Lovato and Lisa Bentley, who will be defending her title from 2008. Professional athletes will compete for a $30,000 prize purse. Ironman is pleased to announce that the 2009 Amica Ironman 70.3 Rhode Island, in its second year, will now serve as an official qualifying event for the Ford Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Given the sell-out rate of Ford Ironman Lake Placid and Eagleman Ironman 70.3, this now gives athletes in the region another opportunity to qualify. There will be 28 age group spots to this year's World Championship.
