Entries filling fast for 27th Ironman New ZealandIronman New Zealand organisers are predicting their first ever sell-out only one week after opening entries for the 2011 event, with more than 75% of the available entries already snapped up for the 27th Ironman New Zealand, held in Taupo on Saturday, March 5 next year.

Virtually all of the entries that have flooded in since entries opened on May 1 are from overseas, mostly from Australia after both of their Ironman events sold out.

It has prompted Ironman New Zealand organisers to contact all previous participants to ensure they are aware that the event may sell-out many months ahead of the race.

The strong interest from Australia, especially, has come about because December’s Ironman Western Australia filled and then Ironman Australia, scheduled for next May filled in just one day.

“This has led to several hundreds of Australians entering for Taupo,” Ironman New Zealand Event Director, Jane Patterson said.

“In 2011 we won’t put more than 1,500 on the course and right now we have more than half already entered which is remarkable.

“We’ve gone out to our database to let them know. Traditionally many New Zealanders will wait until late in the year or even into January before committing to Ironman New Zealand. We don’t want them disappointed to find out the event has reached a sell out. There will be no waitlist.

“Equally, as the original international Ironman, we have always attracted significant numbers of overseas competitors which gives us a truly global feel, and we want our many hundreds of regulars not to be disappointed.

“This upsurge of interest is in keeping with trends throughout the world which sees Ironman events filling to capacity quickly in North America and Europe in particular.

Ironman New Zealand, like Ironman Australia and Ironman Western Australia, will not be running a waitlist.
