The sixth edition of the event will not only see the biggest amateur field, but also the largest pro field with 51 Pros, 34 of which are men. The day of reckoning edges ever closer as the field for the 2010 Spec-Savers Ironman South Africa takes shape. A record field of over 1,800 athletes will descend upon Nelson Mandela Bay this April. The hype and fanfare all stems from the talent on the starting line come April 25th. Among those will be South African favourite and local boy, Raynard Tissink (RSA), and defending women's champion, Lucie Zelenkova (CZE). With temperatures topping 30 degrees Celsius it was more than the racing that was hot here in Port Elizabeth today. A thrilling day of racing that was to see new swim and overall course records for both men and women started as near 1,500 athletes thundered into the Indian Ocean to the sounds of African drummers and dancers performing on Hobie Beach. They say that once you've been to Africa you'll always want to go back, and this weekend's Spec Savers Ironman South Africa only seems to re-inforce that saying with a men's field that is replete with former champions seeking to retain or regain the crown. Last year's race saw a breakthrough result for Stephen Bayliss, the first of his two wins on the Ironman circuit when he beat beat local hero and 2005 winner Raynard Tissink, while the 2006 and 2007 winner, Gerrit Schellens, was sidelined with an injury.
