World Triathlon Corporation (WTC), owners of the Ironman and Ironman 70.3 brands, announced that the 2010 edition of Ironman Western Australia is sold out. Entries reached the maximum of 1,400 competitors early on the morning of April 27, 2010, more than nine weeks before the scheduled closing of entries.
WTC General Manager, Shane Smith, said that the sell-out of the 2010 event represents a step in the right direction for the growth of the sport in Australia.
“Building the Ironman brand in Australia is our primary mission. The fast sell-out of Ironman Western Australia is an indication that we are on the right track.”
“Athletes who have registered for this year’s event will have a fantastic experience on December 5. We’d like to thank our athletes for entering early and having great faith and confidence in the Ironman brand and Ironman Western Australia,” Smith said.
Interest from interstate and international markets has driven the number of registrations for this year’s event. Of the 1,400 competitors registered for Ironman Western Australia, 332 international athletes will be participating with the strongest representations coming from Singapore (68 athletes), U.S.A (59 Athletes) and the United Kingdom (35 athletes). NSW and Victoria provide the strongest interstate representation, each with 235 athletes entered.
Executive Director, Eventscorp, Mr David Van Ooran, said “The event is a fantastic way to promote Busselton, the region and Western Australia as an extraordinary holiday destination with large contingents of competitors already planning their trip from the United States, Singapore and the United Kingdom.”
“Closing off entries nine weeks ahead of schedule is a great achievement and representative of the hard work and dedication of event organisers for Ironman Western Australia 2010,” Van Ooran said.
