The field of athletes competing this weekend at the Sparkassen Finanzgruppe Ironman 70.3 European Championship in Wiesbaden is nothing short of amazing. Although the two-time Ironman 70.3 world champion Michael Raelert had to pull out of the race because of an injury, there remains a number of world class athletes in the field. At a press conference earlier today the Lord Mayor and Sports Councillor of Wiesbaden, Dr. Helmet Mueller, along with the managing director of race organizer Xdream Sports & Events, Kai Walter, announced that Ironman 70.3 Germany is now the official Ironman 70.3 European Championship. Under hot conditions with temperatures reaching around 28°C by the late afternoon, the crown of the third edition of the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe IRONMAN 70.3 Germany in Wiesbaden went to lightning fast young German Sebastian Kienle (4:04:34,8) and Dutchwoman Yvonne van Vlerken (4:42:46,1) in record setting times. More than 2,500 triathletes and 270 relays will compete on August 16 at the third Sparkasse Finanzgruppe Ironman 70.3 Germany in Wiesbaden. After swimming at the Schiersteiner Hafen, athletes will take in a scenic bike loop with some challenging climbs and rolling descents in Rheingau-Taunus, followed by a four-loop run course at the historic Kurpark Wiesbaden.
