Cunningham defends Longhorn title while Zeiger tunes up for Clearwater defence

Zeiger and Cunningham take Longhorn 70.3Richie Cunningham successfully defended his title in at the Longhorn Ironman 70.3 in Texas, while Joanna Zeiger led from start to finish as she prepares to defend her Foster Grant Ironman World Championship 70.3 title in Clearwater in a few weeks.

Zeiger led the women's field out of the water in Austin, well ahead of even the fast-swimming Tereza Macel, who is no-doubt still recovering from an impressive fourth-place finish at the Ford Ironman World Championship a few weeks ago. Zeiger was never really challenged throughout the day and would finish just over two minutes ahead of Heather Jackson and almost six-minutes up on third place finisher Nicole Hofer.

In the men's race Brian Fleischmann led out of the water, 22 seconds ahead of Cunningham. That lead was gone, though, by the end of the bike as Cunningham, Fleischmann, Luke Bell and Massimo Cigana started the run within seconds of each other. Averaging just over 5:30/ mile, Cunningham ran his way to the title ahead of Fleischmann and a fast-running Alessandro Degasperi, who ran past Bell to take third.

Cunningham also appears to be in good form heading into the Foster Grant Ironman World Championship 70.3 in Clearwater next month – he's finished third at the event two times, including last year.
