With the National Weather Service issuing rip-tide warnings for the Benton Harbour region of mighty Lake Michigan, the 1.2-mile swim was placed in jeopardy before the daylight broke today. With choppy waters that prevented the safety boats and personnel from entering the water and steady 15 to 20 mph winds that, at times gusted up to 25mph, the swim portion the 2011 Whirlpool Ironman 70.3 Steelhead was cancelled and the race was relegated to a 56-mile bike and 13.1-mile run. This weekend the Ironman 70.3 circuit returns to Benton Harbour, Michigan for the sixth edition of the Whirlpool Ironman 70.3 Steelhead event. The race was the brainchild of Mike Ryan and Tom Ziebart and, with the assistance of event promoter, Jan Caille, the trio put on the inaugural Steelhead Triathlon in 2003. Over 100 Triathletes/Volunteers will be coming together this Friday, July 30, from 1-6 pm at the Boys and Girls Club at 1200 East Main Street in Benton Harbor, Michigan, to assist with Coaching and Mentoring of kids at the club's annual Olympic Field Day. On August 1, 2009 the seventh annual Whirlpool Ironman 70.3 Steelhead Triathlon will take place in Benton Harbor/St. Joseph, Michigan at Jean Klock Park.
